Listen to the Song: Golden Child
Song Title: Golden Child
Composer: Keith Newton
Lyrics: Alicia Aguello Cook (Alicia Keys), Keith Newton
Vocals: TaNeal (Tanell Rushing)

About the Poem (In your [Alicia's] own words…)

Golden Child was written during “one of the most devastating times in my life. It seemed like nothing could go right and everything I believed was being tested and torn down…No one could understand my pain…Nothing is right...This was a turning point for me. I was forced to believe in myself and not in what others thought of me. It was one of the hardest lessons I’ve ever gone through, and it changed my life forever.”

About the Song (notes from Keith - (the composer/arranger)

The lyrics for Golden Child come from a combination of sources. The primary source is Alicia's poem “Golden Child” however I also incorporate other poems into the song including but not limited to P.O.W., Lilly of the Field, and Damn You.  Finally, I use some of my own lyrics (written in the style and spirit of the piece) to complete the song.

The music is all original! I spent a fair amount of time and energy trying to craft music that reflected the depth of the emotions found in the poem. The arrangement is also from me, keys, drums, strings and all created and arranged in my home studio. If you want to know the gear, I used Cubase SX, Sampletank instruments, Korg Triton samples, a few custom sounds and lots of blood sweat and tears.

The vocalist is a friend of mine, TaNeal, for whom I’ll always be grateful for taking the time to learn a difficult song and for putting her heart and soul into the performance!
